Jobs Boost at Island boatbuilder (Isle of Wight County Press, July 1st 2011)

New jobs and expansion could be on the horizon for an Island boatbuilder, which has secured millions of pounds-worth of new orders.

South Boats technical director Ben Colman said they had won £28 million-worth of orders in recent weeks, almost doubling the companies annual turnover.

Regular customer Turbine Transfers, a Holyhead-based company that specialises in transporting crew and equipment to offshore windfarms has ordered seven extra vessels.

Newly formed island company Seacat Services has also purchased two vessels, as has P&O Maritime Services. In total South Boats has had orders for 14 boats in recent weeks.

Several of the orders came after a particularly successful year at the industry exhibition, Seawork, in Southampton. "We have got more orders to come. The company is ideally placed to take advantage of the offshore turbine industry. We are recognised as world leaders in this field. We will be moving ahead with a yard expansion plan in the next four months and that should lead to the creation of new jobs", said Mr Colman.

Ian Baylis, of Seacat Services, said they also intended to work with the offshore wind industry and the deal with South Boats was the start of what they hoped would be a long and productive relationship. "We are extremely pleased to be working with such a forward-thinking boatbuilder, which is at the cutting edge of technological and class develpoments"
